Nursing Career and its Advantages in doing Higher Education Essay

Abstract Nursing image is changing every day from ancient gown and cap to colored scrubs. People choose nursing for different reasons. I chose this profession because; I like to be a role model for the new nurses. After I graduated as a Registered Nurse (RN) in 1999 my first patient said, â€Å"If an Angel has dropped from heaven that is you nurse†. R.Mariam (personal communication, June, 1999). This sentence inspired me a lot and gave hope in my career. Job satisfaction is an essential part in any profession especially in this field since, we deal with life and death and it helps to raise patient’s safety, performance, quality of care, patient’s satisfaction and productivity of the organization. Like in any other field, this field also has some frustrations, but facing the problem and coping with frustrations is what helps us to reach the goal. This paper also explains the advantages of doing continuing education since, nursing profession is widely spreading and changing every day and it needs highly qualified knowledgeable and competent employees to serve. Nursing Career and its Advantages in doing Higher Education Nursing is an art, science and profession by which we render care for the patients irrespective of all ages, religion, caste or gender who are acutely ill and in critical condition. Nurses around the world make the largest group of health professionals. They are the back bone of the healthcare system. Nurses are not only providing care for the patients, but they are also responsible for the emotional welfare of patients and their families too. Career as a Critical Care Nurse: When I was a kid, I always wanted to pursue a career in nursing or medical field. I have a sister who is a nurse. At the age of 19 years in India, I  decided to go for nursing degree and I graduated as a Registered Nurse in 1999. Nursing profession touched me a lot and it made my career interesting. I started my career as an Operating Room scrub nurse and circulating nurse. It was interesting everyday by not only taking care of the patients, but also managing the operating room activities, ensuring that the equipment’s are safe and sterilized, equipment’s are properly audited and consent forms were filled and signed by concerned members of the family. It is very crucial to be an operating room nurse, as the entire procedure depends on the efficiency and job knowledge. It is the responsibility of the nurse to be the mediator between the patients, families and the physicians. Being an operating room nurse I did not have much interaction with my patients. Almost all patients in operating room gets general anesthesia. As an OR nurse, I felt I am not interacting with the patients well and I am not fulfilling my job as a nurse completely. After few years, I decided to become an Intensive Care Unit (ICU) nurse. Transition from OR to ICU nurse was little hard for me initially, but I enjoy working with the patients and spending enough time with them and their families. At times, I have to be an advocate between the patients, families and doctors because we deal with critically ill patients. Reason for Motivation to continue in Nursing: According to Locke and Lantham (2002), Personal goals play an important part in direction and maintenance of behaviors which is needed to achieve rewards. People who are confident, believe in their ability to achieve goal and believe that the attainment of goal will lead to successful career are the ones able to complete their task effectively to reach their goals (Lent, Brown, & Hackett, 1994). Nursing profession is one of the widely expanding fields that call for passion according to (Raye, L. 2006). It is a good choice for people who find themselves more comfortable and satisfied in helping people who are in need to maintain and achieve normal health. Nursing offers wide variety of opportunities according to each individuals interests such as critical care unit, labor and delivery, pediatrics, geriatrics, telemetry, med-surg, oncology, infectious diseases, pain clinic, outpatient clinic etc. And also  it offers continuing education and competencies to keep the knowledge and skills up-to-date (Raye, L.2006). It offers flexible working hours such as three twelve hour shifts or four ten hour shifts (Blanche, J.2010). And due to the availability and shortage for nurses it offers incentive and bonuses for extra hours. It is a lifetime career which is flexible and rewarding. If we lose jobs in one position there are lots of available jobs in the market for talented individual s. It is also well-paying job with good benefits such as tuition reimbursement for higher education, medical benefits, life insurance and child care. Overall it is flexible. The reason why I have chosen nursing career was, a nurse who inspired me in my life and my interest towards, caring for human beings. The American Association of Colleges of Nursing (1998, 2008) and the National League for Nursing (2007) identified caring as the foundation for nursing. At the age of 15 years old, my dad had a massive heart attack and he was in Intensive care unit. He was intubated, on the ventilator, with so many drips infusing, with monitor alarming all the time. My whole family was very upset and hopeless. The nurse who took care of my dad was very dedicated , honest and very knowledgeable , she went above and beyond in helping us in that situation, keeping track of vital signs, maintaining his breathing, keeping him hemodinamically stable, giving back care, mouth care, sponge bath and giving emot ional support to the family and explaining what’s is going on with him. Few days later my dad died in the hospital but the nurse who took care of my dad stayed in my mind. Since then I always wanted to be a nurse who is caring, attentive to the emotional wellbeing of the patients and their families, providing emotional support because family place trust and self-respect in our hands. They want us to keep their loved ones comfortable, pain free and monitored all the time and not left alone. My passion for nursing grew when a patient or family member smiles at me and say â€Å"Thank you†, it enlightens me and lights up my day with more energy and spirit. Frustrations in Nursing Profession: The most important thing that frustrates me is the charting. Now most of the hospitals are computerized, but some hospitals still do paper charting and add more and more paper work every day. This means I have to spend more time doing paper charting than taking care of the patients. Sometimes we are short staffed and we have to do not only the registered nurse jobs, but we also have to be a house keeper doing accidental cleaning, secretary entering orders, patient care tech, Phlebotomist doing lab draws and also calling doctors with the patient’s lab and radiology results if we don’t see them on rounds. These are the thing which frustrates me, because it reduces the time which we spend for the patient care. Overall, Frustrations are common and it can happen in any other field but the nature of frustration may differ. Advantages due to addition Education in my Career: 1. Now most hospitals in New Jersey prefer Bachelor’s degree in nursing and there is a â€Å"global shortage for nurses, it gives us job security† (Blanche, J.2010). 2. It offers potential high income for well qualified employees. 3. More choice availability to go back to school to continue in higher education for nurse practitioners, nurse anesthetist and nurse educator. 4. It also helps us to interact with the other hospital nurses and health care professionals in classes which help me to improve patient care and make my job more enjoyable. 5. It gives knowledge and skills in critical thinking in assessment and problem solving in everyday practice. 6. It offers opportunity to be a mentor for the new nurses and to be a resource nurse. 7. By doing Bachelor’s degree in nursing, I am sure by the end of the course I will be well trained in areas such as effective communication, leadership and critical thinking which is very important in today’s nursing practi ce as well as it is necessary for administrative position, research and teaching. The new generation might not willing to bound into marriage life and they wish to remain in single life so they can have more privacy, freedom and the commitment of   responsibilities. However, marriage is union ordained by God and it is also a wonderful union of two people in love. It is unique, opposite-sex union with legal, social, economic and spiritual dimensions. Getting married does bring a lot of advantages to a person either family.The biggest advantage for getting married is emotional stability. Married people treat their own family as shelter and they can feel secure and relax when staying together with their family. Family provides a peace and comfort zone for those married people to restore their energy. Marriage can helps the couple to become more tolerant, unselfish, caring and more responsible. Its provide a chances for the husband and wife to grow with and sharing their life’s challenges, rewards and sorrows with a person who actually knows and understand what you going through and feels the same frequency.There are a lots of difficulties have to learn by marriage people as that is not easiest to living with someone for the rest of their life. They have to overcome all the problems facing by them and to learn how to take care of others feeling, patience, emotion control, temper, time management and attitude towards their family. In a marriage life, there are always someone’s to hear your companions. It is good to have someone there to have a share, to bounce ideas or to have a witty exchange of remarks.Companionship among the married peoples also offers support and can be particularly important at times of trouble or stress. At such times, married people have distinct advantages over being single. The other advantage for marriage is that allows couples to pool their both incomes to share the cos t of living and debts, save more money for retirement and doing investment. The married people can also sharing a house, car and food so they can enjoy save cost for basic living conditions compare with a single person.Therefore, people who are married become less poverty but more wealth and their money goes further. It is because, they tend to specialize, exchange, and share roles and functions in ways to generate higher earnings, encourage savings, helping each other’s to restrain from impulse spending, and generally leave the family financially better off. Marriage can also leads to better health and greater longevity for people. There are more likely to enjoy better physical health. The spouses are intimately aware of and impacted by their spouse’s choices.In a sense, couples have a significant vested interest in watching out for one another and encouraging healthy choices and behaviour. For example, the wife might not allow her husband drinking, smoking or other u nnecessary risk-taking and also control his weights. Compared to single, divorced or widowed people, the married people experience less depression, anxiety, and other types of psychological distress. Besides, the married people will have active, satisfying and safety sex lives compared with single people. The married people tend to have more sex because it costs them less in time, money and psychic energy.They have find it more satisfying because their sex partner is more available, less distracted, more eager and more secure and able to please. The higher levels of satisfaction for married couples is related to the fact that marriage adds meaning to the sexual act because it symbolizes a union that is based on sexual fidelity, stronger commitment and emotional intimacy. It had increased their commitment and their sense of responsibility, and had generally strengthened their relationships. In addition, the married life can brings greater safety towards the married people and expand their social network.It’s because, the married people have companion to visit places together, visit friends or holiday together. For the single person, that is far more difficult as often modern social life is geared around ‘couples' and the single person can often feel left out or sometimes, simply not invited. At times, perhaps, having children might seem to impede their social life but it just brings a change in your social life and much of that social life involves being with your children. Lastly, married people will create a family with a new and challenging life instead of boring life compared with single people.Families are created and held together by the lifelong commitment of a man and a woman who live cooperatively and raise and nurture the children born to them. Families are the building block essential to the formation of a community, and strong social structure arises from the foundation many families provide. A thriving society and culture depend on sta ble marriages. For example, as marriage declines in a culture,  the state must spend more money and care for children who less of the financial stability with divorce family background.Strong marriages statuses are at the heart of thriving family and community. In conclusion, getting married is better than being single as there married leads to emotional stability, financial stability, train the couples become more independent and responsible, better health and greater longevity, have wonderful sexual life, easy to expand social networks and have a new challenging life instead of boring life compared to single people. The focus of this paper is Hinduism as a religion and more importantly what makes it a religion, now that it lacks a uniting belief (Kim.  1998). Hinduism ranks third among the largest religions in the world. It is estimated that in the world today there are about eight hundred and 20 million followers of this particular religion. This is a big increase in terms of followers in comparison to a few years back. Hinduism is also considered as one of the most organized yet the oldest religion in the world. This not withstanding Hinduism has been described by many theologians as not being a full-fledged religion in terms of composition as there are some components the religion lacks (Axel. 2004). Unlike other religions Hinduism does not have a universal founder. While Islam is believed to have been found by Prophet Muhammad who was sent by Allah, Christianity was founded by Jesus who was sent by God. This is however not the case in Hinduism as there is no particular person who is the founder of this faith. Hinduism as a religion also lacks a specific holy book as there is a Bible in Christianity and a Quran among the Muslims. There is also not a centralized system of authority and the concept of a prophet being sent by a supreme being is non existent in Hinduism. Hinduism also lacks a system of theology that is specific as it the case with other religions (Gavin. 1996). Hinduism had never been considered as a religion for many years for lack of these major components that make up a religion. However, as years went by due the large numbers that this faith was claiming it was now ranked among the three major religions in the world. Hinduism has instead been viewed more as a way of living than as a religion. While other religions, Christianity for instance are a group of people with the same kind of faith, Hinduism is made up of various religions where people profess different faiths. These different faiths have their origin in India and with gradual evolution they have led to the growth and development of Hinduism as a religion (Axel. 2004). Hinduism is very much bent on the beliefs of an individual on what is right as opposed to worshipping a supreme being. Although Hinduism is one of the oldest faiths of the world, it lacks unification and many people have always considered as a lesser religion or better still an organized group of faithful as opposed to a religion. Looking at the definition of a religion it is in order to conclude that Hinduism is not a religion but instead a well organized form of faith. The concept of God lacks in this form of faith and the shepherd who is usually the clergy in other religions acts like a mere guideline to other members of the society. Hindus have no one particular God to who they give worship and praise. Instead they have an array of gods who are represented by idols. Hinduism has been described as one of the most tolerant religions in the world where freedom of worship is granted to the faithful of the religion. For instance a Hindu faithful needs not frequent the temple so as to be considered righteous. Instead following the rules of the religion is considered enough (Gavin. 1996). Something major to note is that all; gods in the Hindu religion are not divines as is the case in other religions. While in Islam and Christianity, God is divine, in Hindu, their gods are artificially made and are mainly represented by animals especially cows. However the Hindu religion has one major strength and this is the manifestation of the religion. While in many religions this aspect does not always come out strongly, in Hinduism manifestation is considered as part of the daily routine (Gavin. 1996). In conclusion it is correct to argue that Hinduism is only considered a religion and indeed one of the major religions of the world mainly because of the mass following it has and not because of its composition. It has however been able to grow over the years and has found its place in the world and is now ranked third among the main religions.

Examining Effective Leadership Styles Throughout history of health care policy makers they were challenged to develop powerful leadership skills for future nurses leaders. Therefore there was a need to develop different contemporary leadership styles and behaviors, other than those theories known before. Contemporary leadership styles is not just a group of skills or missions, it is rather an attitude that value on the collaboration and effective teamwork. Contemporary leadership is dynamic relationship that will lead the leaders and followers to a higher level of moral and teamwork development. (Lanier Rose, 2008). Effective leaders as reflected in this literature of leadership, is one who is having the ability to create a healthy environment that will affect the motivation, efficiency, and effectiveness of their employees. In addition a good leader needs to have different leadership styles and attitude, and need to know in which situation he/she can evidence a particular approach. Furthermore in order for good leaders to drive their organization forward they need to practice authority, and help their employees to motivate, plan, lead, control, organize and achieve their goals and activities. (Jenkins, 2009). This paper covers briefly seven contemporary leadership styles: quantum leadership, charismatic leadership, transactional leadership, transformational leadership, shared leadership, and servant leadership. Also in this assay I will discusses and examine effective leader from throughout the literature and how leaders can develop effective leadership styles that will impact successfully on the organization. Mainly by exploring and comparing between two famous forms of contemporary leadership approaches, the transactional and transformational leadership styles. Thin I will focus on my writing on one of the nursing leaders that inspired me, what were her leadership styles, and what makes her a good leader in my view, and what I think she was lacking as a leader. Contemporary leadership styles Quantum leadership is based on important strategies, such as building capacity, thinking, planning, and working in collectively. In one of the research study program conducted by Jennifer Milewski, she developed seven drives of effective quantum leadership which are building strong community relationship, open the way for the community initiative, find source of power in society, deal with difficult and complicated tasks, build relationships with other systems, motivate employee for continuous learning, and bring the future to the present. (Milewski, 2006). What makes quantum good is that the leadership is shared activity and skills between the leader and employee in the health care system because all the staff and patient can have access to the information not only the leader. (Sullivan Decker, 2009). Leaders how are having charismatic personality characterizes by being dynamic, with attractive and magnetic personality, and they inspire their followers through their speech. What makes this style strong and powerful is that people follow the leader speech regardless of the content of their message without the need for providing evidence and they usually value religion and politics more than facts, on the other hand charismatic is limited because followers today are more knowledgeable and aware and they will not listen to any leader easily without providing evidence based practice. (Mc Crimmon, 2007). Martin Luther King is good example for this style. Transactional leadership is about exchanging socially whereby the leader and follower are expected to give and receive social, political, physiological, and economical benefit. In this style leaders are expected to motivate, enhance and meet their employee goals, objectives, and loyalty within the scope of their practice and policy, moreover transactional leader work on day to day operation, it is like when you are asked to work overtime hours and on the other hand you expect to receive bonus. (Sullivan Decker, 2009). Transformational leadership as defined by Burns is based on motivating, inspiring and empowering both leader and follower, and to work side by side to achieve and maintain the vision and preferred future. Transformational leader see themselves as a changing agent, lifelong learner, believes in people and able to handle and manage complex task. Transactional leadership has been the basis for the nursing administration curriculum. (Malloch Porter, 2006). Relational leadership or connective leadership as introduced by Klakovich is based on flexible management that will motivate health care team, clients, and families. She also explained that this approach focuses in creating and strengthens interconnection between and among multidisciplinary team. (Klakovich, 1994). The manager usually shows relational leadership element when convening the multidisciplinary team to plan or change the patient care program, and this will break the hierarchical relationship and lead all member to develop leadership at all level in the organization. (Sullivan Decker, 2009). Shared leadership is based on the principle of relationships, partnerships, discussion, and understanding the limit. This approach shares the managing and leading responsibilities between two or more leaders since they donà ¢Ãƒ ¢Ã¢â‚¬Å¡Ã‚ ¬Ãƒ ¢Ã¢â‚¬Å¾Ã‚ ¢t expect that one leader has the ability and knowledge to handle and manage all tasks effectively. (Sullivan Decker, 2009). Servant leadership approach is suggested to support nursing staff in patient care where extra expectation and support are required from the managers, it is also ensure quality nursing care where there is increase the demand on nursing work force. In health care environment ità ¢Ãƒ ¢Ã¢â‚¬Å¡Ã‚ ¬Ãƒ ¢Ã¢â‚¬Å¾Ã‚ ¢s believed that the work will be enhanced and be more effective with more servant- oriented management approach. (Jenkins Stewart, 2010). By the end, each leadership model is attempting to persuade the followers to follow their management strategies for the greater success of the organization. Effective leader and leadership Leadership is defined in many way but all of them agree that it is a process that influence individual, team, or the community to achieve their goal. It can be formal or informal depending on the leader authorities and personal skills. (Sullivan Decker, 2009). Effective leader must be able to influence, empower, and motivate the follower to participate for the effectiveness of the organization. (Chen, Beck, Amos, 2005). Mcshane and Vonglinow in 2005 listed some important characteristic and skills for effective leadership, those include but not limited to intelligent, confidence, motivation, knowledgeable about the business, integrity, command and emotional intelligent, and these skills will enable the leaders to be effective and strong with any leadership style they are following. One reason that might affect the development of effective leader is when a new leader is surprised that people who promoted them are not following, especially in health care system where leadership position is given without strong educational background and experience. Therefore the leader must develop better ways for managing, leading, and convincing their follower. They should be able to negotiate, and satisfy their employees in order to drive the organization forward. (Karlene, 2008). In nursing career leaders who function beyond the classic leadership style are needed, that will provide a direct contact between nurses and their manager in order to create positive work environment specially where retaining nurses are becoming a great challenges. (Amany, Susan, Mary, 2009). Through my reading I realized that effective leader must practice authority, empower and motivate employees to face their fears, and enable them to share in decision making process and by being intelligent in selecting the most effective leadership style that works with different changes in the organization, can have a major impact on the successful of the organization. Moreover maintaining and stabilizing the organization after achieving the success and desired vision is critical for the progression to continue. Transactional and transformational leaderships Many researchers have conducted to examine the most effective model between transactional and transformational leadership theories. The difference between both of them where first recognized by Weber 1998, who said that transactional leadership power is based on controlling the basis of knowledge and leaders usually aim to compromise and negotiate with followers in order to achieve higher efficiency, and they promote subordinates to complete their successful. On the other hand in transformational approach leaders have charismatic character that aim to transform employees and help them to change ways of thinking by using new ideas, and leaders create learning opportunities for their followers and encourage them to solve problems. (Kotlyar, Karakowsky, 2006). Other studies have related transformational and charismatic approaches; both are similar by attracting and enhancing followers. In contrast charismatic inspires followers superficially; however charismatic is certainly a shot of transformational leader. (Bass Bass,2008). what I cant forget and still wander in my mind when she said to me: always follow your intuition and answer the hidden voice inside you, whenever you feel that something wrong is going on with your patient even if you are sure that she is clinically stable, and that is just feeling, dont ignore it and check her continuously till that feeling leave you. Later I realized that sometimes such feeling is harbinger.

Ludeman Abstract Health care systems are created to provide quality and efficient care to patients when they need treatment. The health care system in Australia is universal. Therefore, it provides free health coverage for citizens in public hospitals. It also covers a portion of the fees in private hospitals; however, the patient has to pay the remainder of the payments at private hospitals out of pocket. Australia does not only have public health insurance, but it has private health insurance as well. Citizens who are capable of affording it are encouraged to apply for private health insurance. Having private health insurance on top of the public insurance is extremely beneficial. The health care system in Australia has provided some of the best care to the citizens of its country. Australia’s Health Care System Australia has a developed health care system that is substantially beneficial to the residents of the country. It supplies universal health care to all citizens; which means that the government pays for all or most of the health care services. Some visitors are also eligible to receive the health care in Australia while visiting. According to the World Health Organization website, â€Å"the goal of universal health coverage is to ensure that all people obtain the health services they need without suffering financially when paying for them.† Financial issues are typically the main reason for why people refrain from getting medical treatment until it becomes serious and they are sent to the emergency room. In the United States, this is a problematic issue that comes into play. However, the health care system in Australia does not make the citizens refrain from getting treatment. The health care system has allowed Australian health care providers to give some of the best care in the world to its citizens. The Australian government has attempted from the very beginning to give its country the best possible care through its health care system. According to the World Health Organization website, â€Å"a good health care system delivers quality services to all people, when and where they need them.† This is something that the government in Australia has worked very hard to do for its citizens. Australia has managed to have some of the highest life expectancy rates in the world, and some of the lowest mortality and infant mortality rates. In Australia, the life expectancy for males is 78.9 years of age, and 83.6 years of age for females (Leiyu Shu, 2014). Although, Australia typically has good health overall throughout the population, there are always some groups that do not have the best health. These people are considered to be the vulnerable populations; those that live in the rural areas. The vulnerable people in Australia are not left unknown or unaware of how to receive treatm ent when it is needed. The government has made known of these populations, and have set up programs to decrease this â€Å"gap.† Decreasing this gap will increase the overall percentage of excellent health that Australia has as a whole (Armstrong, Gillespie, Leeder, Rubin Russel, 2007). After the Second World War, the number of people covered by health insurance had increased dramatically. However, there still was a large portion of the population that lacked sufficient coverage. Gough Whitlam was elected in 1972. His plan was to extend the health coverage to the entire population to eliminate the large portion of the population that lacked any health insurance coverage (Dwyer, 2004). Medibank was the name of the health system that passed in 1974 to increase the amount of people with health insurance. However, Medibank only lasted a couple of years before it was forced to shut down in 1981. On February 1, 1984, Medicare was created by Hawke Labor Government. Today, this is still the current health care system in Australia. Medicare is a universal health care system that gives free health care to the citizens in public hospitals, and in private hospitals it lowers the cost of payments. However, it is not considered to be completely free health care because the citize ns are paying a percentage of the care with their taxes. Therefore meaning that is tax funded, but ran by the government (Dwyer, 2004). The health care system, Medicare, works with both public and private sectors. The public health sectors are provided by all of the levels of government: local, state, territory, and the Australian Government. The private health sectors are provided by private hospitals, medical practices, and pharmacies. However, Medicare is the primary source of funding for health care and funding for primary health care in Australia. Medicare typically covers the majority of costs in public hospitals, and a portion of costs in private hospitals (Australian Government). The Australian government highly recommends that people also get private insurance on top of their Medicare if possible. They recommend this due to the fact that there are often long waiting lines and long waiting lists to get treatment. Regarding the long waiting lines and lists, when you have private insurance you do not have to wait as long for treatment because you are able to pick from a public or private institution to receive the treatment. Also, if you have private insurance you are able to pick your doctor. When you just have Medicare, you do not get to pick your doctor. You typically are just assigned to whatever doctor is available at the time. If you have complications, and need to go back to a hospital for treatment, often times you do not see the same doctor. Therefore, there are many benefits to having private health insurance on top of the public health insurance that is provided to all residents of the country. However, it is not always possible for every citizen to obtain private insurance on top of their public insurance. This is due to low income status of some residents (Australian Government). Medicare covers a variety of different fees in the hospitals and different practices. Therefore giving free or lower cost treatments for patients. In public hospitals, Medicare covers 100% of the treatment. Which means that a patient may go into a surgery, come out, and have not a single payment to make. This means that many Australian citizens will not go into debt or go bankrupt trying to pay their medical expenses. Having medical bills taken care of completely in public hospitals is significantly beneficial; however, there are drawbacks to public hospitals in this country. The waiting lists for some surgeries can be anywhere from one hundred to two hundred days (Healthcare in Australia, 2014). This can cause complications if a person is in serious pain. Often times the waiting lists will force some people to go to private hospitals to receive treatment or get a surgery done. Receiving treatment or getting a surgery done at a private hospital can be extremely expensive without health insurance. Medicare will cover up to 75% of the fees and services that are taken care of in a private hospital (Australian Institute of Health and Welfare, 2013). However, the patient still has to pay out of pocket the portion that the government does not take care of; this could be up to a couple thousand dollars or more. Often, people will take out private insurance, if they can afford, to cover out of pocket costs. It still needs to be taken into consideration that just because an individual has private insurance on top of their public insurance, it does not mean that they will not have any out of pocket payments for their medical expenses. Private insurance also entitles the patient to be able to choose their doctor; something that a patient with only public insurance does not have the option to do. Therefore, a patient with private insurance may have a doctor that they k now and work well with, and they can continue to go to this doctor as long as they have private insurance as well. Private insurance may also provide other services that are not available to the citizens who only have the public insurance. For example, â€Å"physiotherapy, dental, optometry, and podiatry services† (The Australian Immigration Book). Medicare also only covers the services that are necessary. For example, if a patient has a serious heart condition and needs heart surgery, this will be covered. On the other hand, if a patient wants to have plastic surgery but the surgery does not have anything to do with any acute or chronic health condition, this will not be completely covered by the government. The Australian government does an excellent job in assorting what is covered by the government completely, and what receives lower cost treatment for the individuals in the country (The Australian Healthcare system). The Australian health care system has a variety of strengths and successes. The biggest and main strength and success that is portrayed through the health system would be the availability and access of care. The citizens in the country do not have to struggle to pay for care or treatment because they are receiving it for free, or at a lower cost. This is beneficial to their overall health because they are not waiting for the symptoms to become severe before they seek help and treatment; which is a rising problem in some countries that do not provide universal health care. It does not matter if a citizen makes 100,000 dollars a year or 15,000 dollars a year, each person receives the same quality of care as the other (Hsieh, 2014). The health care system has many strengths; however, there are a few weaknesses that need to be considered. One weakness in Australia deals with disease patterns. Serious diseases that are related to age and the vulnerable populations. The country attempts to reach out to the vulnerable populations; however, the outreach is not effective enough to the people who are actually at risk with the diseases. The country needs to find ways to reach out to the community in ways that will be effective and help decrease or treat the chronic diseases (Armstrong, 2007). Another weakness that has been viewed in the system is the shortage of health care providers; whether it be doctors or nurses. Healthcare providers are less willing to work overtime hours due to the attempt to balance work and family life. However, it appears that the high percentage of shortages in health providers are in lower income areas (Armstrong, 2007). The health systems of Australia and the United States are significantly different. The Australian government spends less money on GDP than the United States. However, Australia has higher life expectancy rates than the United States. Therefore, the U.S. is spending a much larger amount of money on health care but is lagging behind in life expectancy rates even with all of the money being put forth (Leiyu Shu, 2014). A large difference between the health systems is that Australia has universal health care, and the United States does not. There are many people in the United States that fail to receive treatment when they need it because they cannot afford to see a doctor. This is a key factor in what may lower the life expectancy rates from Australia. In Australia you would expect to have higher life expectancy rates due to the fact that there is universal health care and that citizens do not have to worry about medical expenses putting them into debt (Leiyu Shu, 2014). In the United S tates that is a serious issue to be taken into consideration. Both countries systems use â€Å"Medicare†. However, they stand for different things in each country. In Australia, Medicare is the name of the universal health coverage provided to everyone. In the United States, Medicare is a program that is provided for people who are 65 or older. These people have owned a right to be in this program because they have worked through their life and received social security benefits. Also, people with disabilities are also eligible to qualify for Medicare. The United States also has a program called Medicaid that is for those who low income. A person has to have a certain income or disability to be able to qualify for Medicaid. Australia does not have programs like the United States does because of the universal health care coverage that is provided (Leiyu Shu, 2014). Although the two countries health systems are significantly different, there are a few aspects that are similar. The systems are similar in terms of wanting to provide the best quality of care for all patients. The two countries want to ensure that patients are being able to afford treatment when they are in need it of it. They also want to ensure that when they are receiving the treatment that they are the best quality care that is possible. Australia and the United States also want to ensure that patients are able to access the care when necessary. The leaders of the United States could learn some valuable aspects for the Australian health care system. One thing that the United States leaders should take in consideration is implementing a universal health care system. The universal system in Australia has been beneficial to the citizens and their health. In the United States there are much larger groups of people who are considered to be vulnerable populations and do not receive treatment when they are in need. Health insurance in the United States can be very expensive if you want good coverage. However, there are people that cannot afford to have any health insurance. Although there are programs for people with low incomes; sometimes these people are over qualified to be eligible for these programs. Which means that these people do not have health insurance at all and have to pay any medical expenses out of pocket. This is the reason why many Americans fail to receive necessary treatment until they are rushed to the emergency room when the symptoms become serious. The United States could also look into spending less on GDP and making sure that the money spent on health insurance is going to improve the overall care and health the citizens. Thus far, the United States spends a significant larger portion of money than Australia and fails to have the quality of health care that Australia has overall (Mascarehhas, 2009). Although the United States could learn valuable information for the Australian government in terms of health care; the United States could also assist the Australian government with their system. Hospitals in the United States do not have long waiting lists like the Australian hospitals. In the United States you may find out that you have an illness, and you are able to schedule the surgery and pick the date that you want without having to wait one hundred or two hundred days to receive the treatment. The United States could help share their techniques about scheduling surgeries with the leaders of the Australian health system. This way residents in Australia would not have to wait up to two hundred days to receive the treatment that they need to improve their health. The United States has a significant amount of health care providers unlike Australia. The United States could help them increase the amount of providers they have by letting them know the incentives and other key factor s that are necessary for having more efficient health care providers. The universal health care system in Australia, Medicare, is beneficial to the citizens of the country. It ensures that all citizens are capable of receiving treatment when they are in need. The treatment is free in public hospitals or it is at a lower cost in private hospitals. The universal health care has increased the life expectancy rates in Australia and has allowed the overall health of the country to be some of the best in the world.
